Why Resize a GIF?

Resizing is the single most effective way to reduce a GIF's file size — more effective than any compression technique. A 1200px-wide GIF resized to 600px is 75% smaller before any compression is applied. That is 75% gone just by changing dimensions. Combine resize with compression, and total savings routinely exceed 90%.

Most GIFs are shared at resolutions far larger than they need to be. A reaction GIF in a Discord chat displays at about 400-500px wide. A Twitter feed GIF renders at 500-600px. An email GIF might be 200px wide. Uploading a 1920px GIF to any of these platforms is wasting bandwidth on pixels nobody will ever see.

Resize Before Compress — Always

The order matters. Resizing permanently removes pixel data. If you compress first and resize second, you compressed data that you then throw away. If you resize first, the compressor has less data to process, runs faster, and produces a smaller result.

Scaling Up vs Scaling Down

Scaling down (making a GIF smaller) is lossless in terms of the content you keep. You are removing pixels, not guessing at them. The result looks crisp because you are discarding information rather than inventing it.

Scaling up (enlarging a GIF) involves interpolation — the tool must guess what pixels go between the original ones. This produces blur, softness, and visible artifacts. GIF's 256-color palette makes upscaling artifacts much more visible than on formats with smooth gradients.

For best results, never scale a GIF up more than 20%. If you need a larger version, go back to the original source (video, image sequence) and create a new GIF at the target resolution.

Aspect Ratio: Keep It or Change It?

Keep aspect ratio (the default) preserves proportions. Your GIF will not look stretched or squashed. The tool automatically calculates the matching dimension when you change one side. This is the right choice 95% of the time.

Unlock aspect ratio when you need specific pixel dimensions that do not match the original — usually for platform requirements. A 1920×1080 GIF resized to 600×600 (square) will look stretched unless you also crop. In that case, crop first, then resize.

Resize + Compress: The Complete Workflow

  1. 1. Determine your target dimensions. Check the table above for your use case. When in doubt, 600px wide.

Resize by Percentage vs Exact Pixels

Use percentage scaling when you want proportional reduction without calculating exact numbers. Setting scale to 50% halves both dimensions — and reduces the file size by approximately 75%. Setting it to 25% reduces by about 94%. This is a quick way to dramatically shrink a GIF for thumbnails or previews.

Use exact pixel dimensions when you have a specific target — platform requirements, layout constraints, or Core Web Vitals thresholds.
